Car crash leads father to facing child abuse charges

Being responsible for a child requires parents to make daily choices to ensure the child’s safety and health. When a California child is injured due to the negligence of a parent, the effects could be lifelong as he or she tries to cope with the emotional toll of the incident. Regrettably, child abuse can range from a child suffering daily bodily harm to a child being injured due to a parent or guardian’s unwise decision.

This may be the case for two 16-year-old boys who were victims of a car accident allegedly caused by their father. The accident occurred around 12:30 a.m. when the father reportedly ran a red light that caused his vehicle to collide with a train. All three people in the vehicle suffered injuries, but the extent remains unclear. The train sustained cosmetic damage, but no injuries to passengers were reported. The father had a blood alcohol content of .20 percent at the time of the accident.

The following day, the man was arrested and charged with DUI causing injury, driving with .08 or more blood alcohol content causing injury and two counts of child abuse. Additionally, he is facing two misdemeanor charges of providing an alcoholic beverage to a person under the age of 21. He is being held on a bond of $410,000.

Child abuse takes many forms, and because of that, many children need protection from future abuse. In cases where child abuse is suspected, a California parent or guardian might want to explore obtaining a restraining order against the abusive parent or seeking sole custody. An experienced attorney can help establish protective measures to benefit a parent and his or her children in circumstances where the other parent or legal guardian has been deemed unfit.
