Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt: temporary child custody agreement

by | Dec 8, 2016 | Child Custody, Firm News |

Divorce is rarely easy on any of the people involved, but it can be especially hard on the children. Even when things remain amicable on both sides, children may struggle to cope with the changes associated with child custody arrangements. Some California residents may be able to sympathize with the much-publicized experience of Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt and their children.

Ms. Jolie filed for divorce following an alleged incident involving Mr. Pitt and one of the couple’s older children on a private jet. In October, a voluntary agreement was made between the couple regarding custody of all of the children. At that time, Mr. Pitt was under investigation by the Department of Children and Family Services. In the past month, he was cleared of any wrongdoing, and the documents detailing the full terms of the temporary child custody agreement were filed in court and signed by a judge in the past week.

At present, Ms. Jolie retains primary custody of the children, while Mr. Pitt is permitted to have monitored visits with them. The frequency of such visits, and conditions attached, are decided by a psychologist who specializes in helping children through custody issues. Both parents must also participate in group therapy sessions with the children. Additionally, Mr. Pitt must also agree to a minimum of four tests a month, at random intervals, to detect the use of drugs and alcohol. These arrangements will now remain in place until such time as they may be changed by either a court order or a revised agreement between the parents.

The majority of California residents may not experience being placed in the spotlight when having to endure such difficult times, but some may be able to relate to the additional concerns involved in child custody disputes. While it is usually preferable for both parents to remain engaged in the upbringing of their children, there are occasions when it is necessary to exercise caution in order to ensure the children’s safety and welfare. It is always important to keep the best interests of the children in mind by seeking appropriate advice for one’s own circumstances.
