Francis Bean Cobain, Isaiah Silva: divorce hits a sour note

by | Jul 28, 2016 | Divorce, Firm News |

There are many quotes about music. It may be the food of love or soothe the savage soul. Within the music industry, however, arguments between couples who decide to divorce can often become very public. California residents may be aware of the recent disputed ownership of one of music’s most famous items of memorabilia.

Frances Bean Cobain, daughter of the late rock star Kurt Cobain, is in the process of divorcing her husband Isaiah Silva, frontman of rock band The Eeries. Married for only 21 months, they had been a couple for around five years prior to that. A major dispute regarding ownership has now arisen over a rare guitar, a 1959 Martin D-18E that once belonged to Kurt Cobain, reported to be the last instrument played by the musician.

Silva is adamant that the guitar was given to him as a wedding gift by his wife, an assertion denied by Cobain. Frances’ mother, musician Courtney Love, is reported as having described the guitar as a treasured family heirloom, reiterating Frances’ assertion that the instrument was never given to Silva as a gift. Silva refuses to return the guitar, the financial value of which is estimated to be in the millions. There can be no price put on the sentimental value it must hold for France Bean Cobain.

This appears to be a complicated issue of property ownership. While the level of value and interest may be unusually high, it is by no means an uncommon problem faced by many California residents going through divorce. Where there is a dispute over property division, it is advisable to seek the appropriate advice in attempting to achieve the outcome which one desires.
