Women and divorce: What to know before filing papers

by | Jun 27, 2014 | Divorce, Firm News |

Divorce is never easy, even between two parties who are resolved to be amicable throughout the process. Perhaps out of fear or “waiting for the perfect time,” many California women often delay actually filing divorce papers. Instead of unnecessarily delaying, it can be beneficial to know what to expect before actually beginning the process. This can help a woman move forward with confidence.

One of the most important and contentious issues in a divorce regards the finances of the marriage. If a woman feels unprepared or not knowledgeable about the couple’s financial affairs, it is beneficial to gather and analyze the available records. Additionally, California women may find it helpful to know their credit score and open separate bank account before the proceedings get underway.

It is important for women to understand that divorce is not free and it can be beneficial to have money set aside for this. Simply understanding legal fees and other possible costs can assist in preparing to move ahead. If delaying a divorce for any reason, an individual can still reach out for assistance in order to mentally, emotionally and financially prepare for a divorce.

There are many reasons why an individual — male or female — may choose to wait before filing divorce papers. However, it is often helpful to use the delay to adequately prepare for what lies ahead. It makes sense to seek assistance, even if there is no intention of actually filing papers for a period of time. There are any number of reasons that dictate the appropriate time for filing divorce papers, and the first step is to gain an understanding of the optimal time to move forward decisively.
